As a final passion project for my Bachelor Digital Design & Development, I created an immersive installation for Poëziecentrum Ghent.Through an interactive installation called ‘The Human Experience’, in the city center of Ghent, I wanted to immerse visitors into a safe space that allows them to learn about common mental troubles such as anxiety and depression. By utilizing poems I selected on these topics and accompanying them with a striking and interactive visual world, based on the foundation of poetic therapy, we can immerse visitors and educate them on the experiences behind this stigma through a poetic looking-glass.
The Brief
To round off my design major in my Digital Design & Development bachelor, I had the opportunity to work for a non-profit of my choosing, to refine and learn a new skill within the design field. The project brief was very open, as long as you focus on expanding your skillset through a useful project for your non-profit. I chose to work for Poëziecentrum Ghent, as a personal interest in poetry and bringing this together with my creative skillset to create a mesmerizing end product.

The Concept
Poetry is known as an effective way of representing human experiences that are otherwise ambiguous or obscure. It allows readers to comprehend complex experiences or weighted topics. To support Poëziecentrum Ghent’s mission for more poetry in the city and more poets, I aimed to implement poetic content to tackle a crucial human experience that is still heavily stigmatized: mental health care.Through an installation called "The Human Experience" in the city center of Ghent, I want to immerse visitors into a safe space that allows them to learn about mental troubles such as anxiety and depression. By utilizing poems I selected on these topics and accompanying them with a striking and interactive visual world, we can immerse visitors and educate them on the experiences behind this stigma through a poetic looking-glass.
The Process — The Educational FocusFor this personal project, my educational focus was on learning more about Blender. Specifically, I learned how to work with geometry nodes to create complex scenes, procedural materials and lifelike renders that range close to other render engines like C4D and Houdini using Cycles. My secondary focus in this project was installation design, to find the best flow for a visitor that allows them to explore and feel comfortable in this immersive space I designed.

The Final ProductWith this Human Experience coming to an end, I invite you to watch my case movie below where you can take a full walkthrough of the installation. With this project I heavily refined my 3D skillset and brought together my passion for poetry with my passion for design, ending my Bachelor in true fashion.
